The NSX went on sale in the summer of 1990. This new car was the most expensive Japanese-brand car on the U.S. market. An all-out midengine sports car, the new NSX 2-passenger coupe had a body and suspension made of aluminum. Transversely mounted in the middle, and ahead of the rear axle, was an aluminum 3.0-liter V6 engine, with dual overhead cams and variable valve timing and titanium connecting rods.

As installed, the engine is well nested.

All of the initial NSX coupes had 5-speed manual transmissions, and the V6 produced 270 horsepower. When a 4-speed automatic transmission arrived a few months later, the engine in that model dipped to 252 horsepower. An NSX could accelerate to 60 mph in a swift 5.6 seconds, according to its maker, and run a quarter-mile in 13.9 seconds.

Chassis features included a fully independent suspension, antilock all-disc brakes, traction control, forged aluminum wheels. Acura claimed to be the first manufacturer to offer electrically driven power steering, but it was initially available only on models with the automatic transmission. Standard equipment included a driver's airbag, leather upholstery, air conditioning, 4 speaker Acura/Bose stereo system power windows, power locks, a tilt steering wheel, and automatic climate control.

Interior trim is superbly crafted and creature comfort is unsurpassed.

One unique feature of the NSX is that it was the only exotic, mid-engine car with trunk space for two golf bags. The front storage will just about hold a pair of gloves.

This particular car was originally purchased by a doctor in the Chicago area who owned the car until 2003. The second owner sold me the car in 2006. The transaction was very pleasant in that the previous owner took the car for a pre-purchase inspection by the dealer of my choice and then trailered the car from Chicago to me in North Carolina. Where do you find people like that in the everyday world?

I have been very pleased with the NSX. It offers great performance even with the automatic transmission, timeless styling and has proven to be quite reliable. The NSX provides reliability found in no other exotic. Simple routine maintenance is all that is required for this car to serve as a daily driver for those so inclined.

There are no stories for the NSX, it is ready to go at any time. A battery tender is recommended if the cars are not driven for three or four weeks. This is true for most cars with parasitic drain from alarm systems and memory related devices.

The quality of these cars is better than will be experience in most modern luxury rides.
